What to consider when going on holiday

Everybody needs a break from time to time, and patients with kidney failure are no exception. Booking last-minute may not be a realistic option, as travel for dialysis patients requires more planning. Yet there are plenty of options to have a vacation in completely different locations.

First, talk to your healthcare team to find out if you are well enough to travel. They will also help you with your plans.
Before traveling, you will need to make appointments for every dialysis treatment during your stay. This way you ensure that the center at your destination is well prepared to receive you and provide treatment.
You should consider vaccinations, your general health status and your personal schedule.
Good to know: There are some cruise lines that have dialysis machines on board.

How healthcare staff at your usual renal care center can support you

The staff at your home renal care center can help you plan your dialysis schedule when you are away from home. This way you can count on your therapy sessions not to be interrupted. Please notify the staff about your trip as soon as possible.

Your healthcare team: 

will share detailed information about your treatment plan with the renal care center at your destination

will send necessary supplies and important medication to the center in advance (including dialysis supplies for PD patients)

will advise you on vaccinations or nutrition with regard to your destination

serves as contact for any questions medical personnel may have during you vacation

can even help you find accommodation in a hotel or apartment close to the center

FAQ: Holiday dialysis

If you have already selected your destination, simply find the local renal care center and send us your request. You should include your details – name, country of origin, telephone number and e-mail address, and most importantly, the languages you speak as well as your travel data. We will then contact you to arrange the best method for all future communication and support.
